An Introduction

My name is Rachel and this is the blog on which I plan to write about my experiences on my year abroad, the good the bad and the ugly! I’m currently in my second year of university studying German and History which means that as of late August/early September I will be jetting off to Germany in a crazy experiment to see if I can survive in another culture for a year and put my language skills to the test. Currently, I do not know where I will be going in Germany (not being able to answer the inevitable questions about where you will be spending the next year of your life is starting to become frustrating!) I have applied to be a language assistant in a school and my first choice for the area I will be living in is Nordrhein-Westfalen. However, I am currently waiting to find out if I have been accepted as a language assistant and then (if I’m successful!) I will find out more details in June. I’m looking forward to seeing how I cope in a foreign country by myself I’m looking forward to (hopefully) spending a year getting some real teaching experience and seeing if all those German stereotypes really are true! Plus I’m excited to see how my German improves. Although it does have to be said that despite the exciting aspects I am also feeling pretty terrified as spending a year abroad will be something that is completely out of my comfort zone. Let’s see if I’m up to the challenge! So to introduce myself here's a photo of me at the leaning tower of Pisa on holiday in Italy last year, mostly because it was one of the few photos I have of myself on this computer but it also fits nicely with the the travel theme of this blog!
